COMMUNITY ORGANISATION AWARD FOR LGBT –
An estimated 15,000-20,000 young people are homeless and up to 24% of youth homeless identify as LGBT. The Albert Kennedy Trust is the LGBT youth homelessness charity, providing safe homes, mentoring, training and support to young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, just for being brave enough to come out to their parents or caregiver. Many of the young people they support have experienced rejection, abuse or violence. This amazing organisation aims to enable young people to manage living independently successfully, and improve attitudes within society towards LGBT young people. Last year, the Albert Kennedy Trust provided 8,000 nights off the streets, handled over 1,500 enquiries, delivered intensive care packages to over 750 young people and provided over 1,000 hours of mentoring. The impact this exceptional organisation is having is quite simply astonishing.
