Andrew Slorance

SHORTLISTED NOMINEE:

ENTREPRENEUR OF EXCELLENCE –

Andrew Slorance was fourteen when a spinal injury left him paralysed. 25 years post accident Andrew was disappointed with the lack of high end, cool and inspiring wheelchairs and decided it was time to revolutionise the wheelchair. With no engineering experience he founded Carbon Black, runner up for Design of the Year 2012 by the London Design Museum and subject of a dedicated BBC TV documentary. Through design and high end materials Carbon Black changed perceptions of wheelchairs towards a stylish and independent image. Andrew again took the entrepreneurial plunge designing wheelchair luggage; the only system in the world that solved the nightmare of pushing a wheelchair while moving heavy bags. Launched in 2017 the Unstoppable travel bags are now available in ten countries. Andrew’s latest venture is bringing artificial intelligence to wheelchairs creating the World’s first SMART manual wheelchair.
