Chineke! Foundation

SHORTLISTED NOMINEE:

COMMUNITY ORGANISATION AWARD FOR RACE, RELIGION & FAITH –

The Chineke! Foundation was founded by the double bass player, Chi-chi Nwanoku OBE, in April 2015 as Britain’s first professional orchestra comprising a majority of black and minority ethnic (BME) musicians drawn from across the UK, Europe and the USA. Chineke!’s mission is “celebrate diversity and championing change in classical music”, and to provide a role model for young BME musicians in the UK and abroad. They are fulfilling this mission through concerts by the Chineke! Orchestra, by the creation of the Chineke! Junior Orchestra, and though a Learning & Participation Programme which takes the joy and stimulation of creative music-making into schools in the many cities where the Chineke! Orchestra performs throughout the country and beyond. In the short time since its foundation, this impressive organisation has already made an extraordinary impact on the UK classical music scene.
