COMMUNITY ORGANISATION AWARD FOR DISABILITY –
Fightback4Justice is a grassroots non-profit Bury-based community organisation supporting disabled people in applications and appeals for a range of welfare benefits and campaigns for change. Fightback was initially started as a Facebook Page by its founding member and lawyer Michelle Cardno, who desired to use her expertise to help others. This quickly grew and now has 14 advocates, some disabled themselves, covering the UK. What started with just a few members 5 years ago has quickly spread to over 48,000 and a regular reach of 500,000. Fightback offers free legal help to disabled people and support. Since inception this incredible organisation has won over 2000 appeals against DWP decisions for people nationwide through advocacy, and hundreds more through useful advice notes and helpline. A collection of over 200 votes from grateful supporters has secured Fightback a well deserved place on this year’s shortlist.
