International Women’s Day Derby

SHORTLISTED NOMINEE:

COMMUNITY ORGANISATION AWARD FOR GENDER –

Behind International Women’s Day (IWD) Derby is a small busy team of women and girls who make a difference by organising an annual IWD Festival for Derby. Over 1000 people enjoy the festival which has a local HERstory going back over 100 years to the Suffragettes. It creates an inspiring and inclusive atmosphere showcasing women’s HERstory, sports, campaigns, charities, multicultural arts and enterprise. It challenges stereotypes, fosters sisterhood and celebrates women’s achievements, boosting self-belief, wellbeing and empowerment and renewing local organisations’ efforts on gender equality. They also run year-round community events, e.g. Picnic for Peace, to bring diverse communities together, consult on festival plans and raising funds. They support others in solidarity e.g. Stand Up to Racism, Disabled People Against Cuts, Derbyshire LGBT+ Pride. This amazing group has a diverse core committee of 20, and is run entirely by volunteers.
