Lorna Fillingham

SHORTLISTED NOMINEE:

POSITIVE ROLE MODEL AWARD FOR DISABILITY –

Lorna is mother to Emily-May, who has a rare genetic condition which means that she has severe learning and physical disabilities. Three years ago Lorna started to campaign for the increased provision of Changing Places toilets, which have an adult changing bench and a hoist, something her daughter relies on to have her toileting needs met. Lorna claimed a local victory when her own council installed 10 Changing Places toilets, and also put a clause into local planning policy that these facilities are considered in public buildings as they are built or redeveloped. Lorna’s petition, calling for Changing Places to be compulsory in larger public buildings, as part of building regulations, has garnered over 54,000 signatures. In February 2018, this outstanding role model handed her petition into Downing Street, which raised the profile of the Changing Places campaign in the media.
