Manchester Cares is a community network of young professionals and older neighbours sharing time, experience and friendship in a rapidly changing city. For older neighbours, the rush and pace of the city can often feel overwhelming. Meanwhile, young professionals can have hundreds of connections in the social media age, but often no roots in their communities. The separation of those parallel worlds wastes human potential, entrenches loneliness and perpetuates social division. Manchester Cares addresses this blight of disconnection by harnessing the people and places around them for the benefit of all – to reduce isolation; improve neighbours’ connection, wellbeing, purpose and power; and bridge gaps across social, digital and attitudinal divides. Part of the wider Cares Family, this brilliant organisation has created some 1,500 interactions across generational lines and connected 250 older people and 250 young professionals.
