Robert Kasanga founded Hackney Wick Football Club in 2015 to give the borough of Hackney its first ever semi professional football team in over 100 years. The aim was to provide children and young people the aspiration of playing senior football, thus deterring them from a life of gangs and crime, which Robert himself had experienced as a youth. Now, the club has a whopping 200 members and in addition to football provides after school activities for youths at their community hub; incorporating coding, graphic design, music production and much more. Robert also formed the United Against Knife Crime Match, a charity football game featuring stars of UK Grime and Rap music highlighting the reality of knife crime and youth violence. As a former gang member, Robert’s transformation from an ex convict to an individual who leads the way in rehabilitation, crime prevention and opportunities is truly astonishing.
