Sophie Ward

SHORTLISTED NOMINEE:

POSITIVE ROLE MODEL AWARD FOR DISABILITY –

Sophie is 24 years old and suffers with chronic Lyme disease. She had many health issues leading up to her diagnoses and despite this was an elite swimmer and competed for Great Britain in the European Youth Olympics. The disease affected her career and robbed her of a place in the 2012 Olympics. Sophie shares her own story through blogs and works tirelessly to raise money for treatment to support others. This incredible role model is a brand leader for the charity Invisiyouth, supporting youths and young adults battling chronic illness, and has encouraged the holiday park industry to promote signs educating the public on the dangers of Lyme disease. There is no direct, effective treatment and ignorance towards the disease leaves many people suffering in silence and facing discrimination. Sophie has battled hard to raise awareness appearing on BBC Breakfast and in national papers.
