COMMUNITY ORGANISATION AWARD FOR DISABILITY –
SURF (Spinal Unit Recreational Fund) is a registered charity run by ex-patients, nurses and friends of the Yorkshire Regional Spinal Injuries Centre. It provides in-patients with valuable life experiences, in a safe environment, supported by experienced wheelchair users and staff to manage health issues. For ex- patients the events provide vital companionship and a lifeline when times get tough. This phenomenal organisation provides all patients past and present with a yearly program of social activity ranging from full days out, e.g. to the Beverley races/coastal trips to a few hours, meals out or an evening at the greyhounds. SURF also host in-centre events like pizza/quiz/ race nights to involve those people for whom attending the community activities is not possible. SURF has assisted over 1,200 people to come to terms with their life changing injuries over the last 20 years.
