St. John’s Centre

SHORTLISTED NOMINEE:

COMMUNITY ORGANISATION AWARD FOR MULTI-STRAND –

Based in Old Trafford, Manchester, St John’s Centre initially set up in response to the Moss Side Riots in the 1980’s. The community, led by a mainly African-Caribbean congregation at St. John’s Church, offered a positive solution to what was happening. The church hall opened and a welcome made to all, offering skills share workshops and a chance to come together to support each other. Thirty-six years later the centre goes from strength-to-strength, continuing to respond to the community. Many people are unwaged, on low incomes and face isolation. The centre offers adult education courses in a range of subjects. Last year 410 learners attend 45 different courses. They have people attending from all over the globe. Community cohesion happens every day. Friendships and networks are made, greater understanding reached, and people develop their full potential.
