Volunteering Matters SAFE project

SHORTLISTED NOMINEE:

COMMUNITY ORGANISATION AWARD FOR GENDER –

Volunteering Matters develop and deliver high impact volunteer-led solutions across the UK in response to some of the most difficult challenges facing individuals and their communities. The SAFE (‘Sexual Awareness for Everyone’) project helps to improve the personal safety and good sexual health of young women (aged 16 – 35) with learning difficulties through peer led workshops, one to one peer support and through the production and distribution of a SAFE card. Female volunteers with learning needs or disabilities receive training on safer relationships, personal and online safety and sexual awareness, and help design and develop engaging and accessible sessions for the workshops. They then help to facilitate the workshops to others, giving advice and mentoring their peers in schools, colleges and youth centres. This crucial project has delivered workshops to over 200 young women across Gwent since September.
