Sarah Cosgriff

Positive Role Model Award

Positive Role Model Award for LGBT

Nominee Profile

Location: Swindon
I am an asexual queer woman who works in science communication and education and an advocate for the asexual community. I am delighted and honoured to be nominated for this category.

Inclusion in STEM is of great importance to me and I have been working in area for several years. In my role at the Association for Science Education, I work with secondary schools to help them to become more welcoming and inclusive places for all students and I have focused in particular on LGBTQ+ inclusion.

I also work for Schools OUT UK, a LGBT+ education charity. It's crucial for young people to see people like themselves in the classroom, however educators often lack access to resources and training to do this. So as part of my work for Schools OUT UK, I develop resources for educators to help them raise the visibility of LGBTQ+ people in the classroom. I have also spoken at conferences and run events.

In my spare time, I volunteer for Out of the Can, a LGBT+ youth group for 13-19 year olds in Swindon. I greatly enjoy volunteering and have ran science activities for the group.

I also do advocacy for the asexual community. I co-founded Aces in STEM, an online space for people on the asexual-spectrum to meet people in different areas of STEM from all around the world. I have also run social media campaigns which highlighted different aces in STEM (over 100 people have been featured so far).

I talk very openly about my experiences of being asexual and raise the visibility of asexuality through talks, events and social media. For example, I create science content for TikTok with asexual themes and speak at STEM events.

As someone who is biracial, it is important for me to raise the visibility of people who are LGBTQ+ and from ethnic minority backgrounds. My cousins and I created the podcast Queer Cuz where we focus on the experiences of queer Filipinos.

I hope you will see my commitment for the LGBTQ+ community through the work that I do and will consider voting for me.
