Community Organisation Award: Multi-Strand
Black Child Down Syndrome (BCDS) is a UK‑based advocacy and storytelling initiative transforming visibility, representation and support for Black children with Down syndrome. Founded by four Black SEND mothers, the organisation addresses the long‑standing absence of culturally relevant narratives within disability spaces. Its landmark project, Reflecting Radiance, created with photographer Misan Harriman, combines portraiture, filmed interviews, and poetry, achieving national impact through gallery exhibitions, Piccadilly Lights and a UK‑wide digital billboard campaign. BCDS also produces children’s books, wellbeing sessions, theatre and cultural archives, redefining grassroots advocacy. Entirely self‑initiated, BCDS is shifting public perception and ensuring Black children with Down syndrome are seen, valued and celebrated.
