Positive Role Model Award

Positive Role Model Award for LGBT: Sponsor - Lush Liverpool

Nominee Profile

Location: Cardiff
I am currently an undergraduate student at Cardiff University who is starting a Masters in News Journalism in September. As a journalist, I want to focus my career on uplifting marginalised voices and platforming underrepresented people.
After coming out at 14 I co-founded the Repton Pride Society which is still active today, turning it from a hide-away group to an established society. I also joined Out For Good, a philanthropic LGBT charity as a youth advisor, to spread awareness and represent the charity at Pride Events.
At college I became the Equality and Diversity Officer and later the LGBT Officer. My roles were to ensure equity across Sutton Coldfield Campus and be a beacon for people to turn to.
At University I fully-involved myself with my community, becoming co-President of Cardiff University's Pride Society. I championed the LGBT community and spearheaded the fight against homophobia on campus, organising events such as pub quizzes for charity, balls, and the attending of a transgender vigil.
Within my journalism, focus on the LGBT community has been front and centre. I co-produced a documentary supporting mental health in women's football which we learned a large queer community, presented a video on a transgender liberation march, and written articles celebrating Cardiff's gayest cafes, championing Pride Society and interviewed someone who came out at University. I'm also in the process of co-producing a documentary on Cardiff's LGBT community.
Beyond my work with the LGBT community itself, I have wanted to embody being an LGBT role model by platforming other marginalised groups and supporting them. My volunteering includes Lliswerry High School where I worked with students taking their English GCSE, and also went to their Pride Society, working with Think Pacific where I supported local businesses in Bali for a month, running a half marathon for Mind, and being a panelist for Cynefin Pamoja to talk about being a journalist.
