Community Organisation Award

Community Organisation Award for Race, Religion & Faith

Nominee Profile

Location: Newport
Active Lives a Muslim women led grassroots organisation based in Newport, Wales. Founded by women from within the community, it was created to address the often hidden inequalities experienced by Muslim women facing barriers such as social isolation, poor mental health, language challenges, racism, and unpaid caring responsibilities.
Rooted in lived experience, Active Lives provides safe, culturally appropriate spaces where women can connect, build confidence, and improve their wellbeing. The organisation recognises the diversity within Muslim communities, with over 15 languages spoken, and delivers inclusive, trauma informed support that reflects different cultures, abilities, and life experiences.
Its work focuses on empowering women through skills development, confidence building, and meaningful social connection. Activities range from practical training such as first aid and food hygiene to workshops in communication, digital skills, and personal safety, alongside culturally relevant wellbeing sessions and community events.
Active Lives is built on a co-production model, working with women rather than for them. Participants actively shape the programme, support one another, and take on informal leadership roles, creating a strong sense of ownership, trust, and community.
The organisation has gained regional and national recognition, including media features and multiple awards for its contribution to inclusion and community impact.
At its heart, Active Lives exists to ensure that Muslim women, often unheard or underserved feel safe, valued, and able to thrive, with a genuine sense of belonging within their communities and wider society.
