Nominee Profile

Location: London
Black Child Down Syndrome (BCDS) is a UK based advocacy and storytelling initiative transforming how Black children with Down syndrome are seen, represented, and supported.

Founded by four Black mothers of children with Down syndrome, BCDS was created to address a critical gap: the near absence of culturally relevant representation and support for Black families within disability spaces.

Its flagship project, Reflecting Radiance, is a groundbreaking visual and narrative exhibition created in partnership with renowned photographer Misan Harriman. The project combines powerful portraiture with filmed interviews from participating families, and poetry; giving voice to lived experiences often excluded from public discourse.

Launched at Hope 93 Gallery, the exhibition has since scaled to national visibility, including a takeover of the Piccadilly Lights and a UK wide digital billboard campaign, placing Black children with Down syndrome at the centre of public space and conversation.

Now working with the London Archives, BCDS has created not just a moment, but a lasting cultural record.

Entirely self initiated and delivered without institutional funding, BCDS is redefining what grassroots advocacy can achieve; shifting narratives, influencing public perception, and ensuring Black children with Down syndrome are seen, heard, and valued.
