Charlotte is a former clinician and civil servant, adaptive athlete, and founder of Beckside Coaching. From Neurology, Neuropsychology and Mental Health to Local Government and Public Health, she has spent over two decades supporting people through some of the most difficult health events of their lives. She held the position of Chair of the Disabled Staff Network in Local Government supporting both employees and the authority to improve conditions for those with disabilities.
In 2022 a spinal surgery left her paralysed. Overnight she became one of those needing that very support. Her dual perspective from clinician to patient and from professional to acutely disabled person, has shaped everything she does.
She experienced first-hand what most disabled people in the UK already know: the system treats your immediate condition and then silence. There is no pathway for the work of rebuilding your life. There is very little that takes the neurological reality seriously. There is almost nothing for the carers, partners, and families who carry the weight of the change alongside you.
She built Beckside Coaching to address that. It exists to give people facing life-changing injury, disability, and transition the support the system fails to provide. It works with individuals, their supporters and organisations to move forward after life changing events. It reaches those who have never been reached when they need this support the most.
Charlotte refuses to participate in current narratives about those with disabilities. She takes a public stance against the way disabled people are often spoken about and works tirelessly to model a different kind of public conversation. Her work is grounded in evidence, neuroscience, and honesty about what life after life-changing events actually looks like. She works to show it is possible to build a meaningful life and provides the framework and tools to do just that. She speaks publicly, writes openly, and uses her status as a subject matter and lived experience expert to raise awareness, create community and drive forward change.
