Disability North
Nominee Profile
Location: Newcastle upon Tyne
Disability North is a long-established user led organisation, dedicated to supporting disabled people, to find independence and live the life they choose. Based in Newcastle upon Tyne, but working across the North of England, we provide expert, independent advice and practical services that promote independence, inclusion, and choice.
We offer guidance on disability benefits, access to equipment, independent living, Direct Payment support to employ Personal Assistants and volunteering. Our support is free, confidential, and impartial, ensuring that individuals can share lived experience and make informed decisions about their lives.
At the heart of Disability North’s work is a commitment to tackling social exclusion and removing barriers that prevent people from fully participating in society. By empowering individuals to live independently and access the resources they need, the organisation plays a key role in improving quality of life and wellbeing.
Disability North actively supports diversity by recognising that disability is only one aspect of a person’s identity. The organisation promotes equality by ensuring its services are accessible to people from all backgrounds, including different ages, cultures, and socioeconomic groups.
We provide tailored support to individual needs and circumstances and help organisations improve accessibility through audits, training, and consultancy, making environments more inclusive. Disability Norths home at the Dene Centre in Gosforth Offers a safe, welcoming space inside and out. We use our outdoor space to create community programmes around accessible gardening, encouraging participation and reducing isolation.
