Positive Role Model Award for LGBT

Nominee Profile

Location: Wiltshire
Sarah Cosgriff is a science communicator and advocate for LGBTQ+ inclusion. They have a background in EDI, and previously worked on equity in education programmes at the Institute of Physics and Association for Science Education.

Sarah's passion for EDI is inspired by their experiences: they attended school under Section 28, a law which prevented schools from talking about LGBTQ+ people, and were one of the few people of colour in their school. They showed an interest in science from a young age, and studied biological sciences at university.

Through their role at Schools OUT, the founders of UK LGBT+ History Month, Sarah delivers sessions and creates resources to help teachers embed LGBTQ+ people into their school curriculum. They also present talks to students about LGBTQ+ history and share their own experiences. For many of the students, they have not heard stories from many LGBTQ+ adults.

To to advocate for and raise the visibility of LGBTQ+ scientists, Sarah engages STEM organisations and science communicators about LGBTQ+ inclusion, produced resources for teachers and featured in an article about LGBTQ+ in STEM in DIVA magazine.

Sarah is also the creator of 'STEM for Queer Youth', a ground-breaking programme which facilitates visits from LGBTQ+ STEM role models to a LGBTQ+ youth group for 12-19 year olds in Wiltshire. They are a regular volunteer for this youth group, and help create a safe space for LGBTQ+ youth to explore their identity and build their skills. Sarah also engages their local LGBTQ+ community through running activities through their local pride group.

Asexual people are an invisible group and often face barriers in workplaces, healthcare and education. Using their expertise and personal experiences, Sarah advocates for change in these settings through public speaking and consulting. They also co-founded the network Aces in STEM, which has almost 500 members internationally, and co-authored an article for Nature Reviews Urology.
