Nominee Profile

Location: Preston
Preston Music Workshops delivers a variety of ongoing and one-off music workshops in the Preston area with the aim of providing everyone with the opportunity to take part in communal music-making. Building on a number of ongoing groups, activities launched in the past year have aimed to reach people who might struggle with typical communal music-making sessions.

In the past 18 months, Preston Music Workshops has:
- Founded and delivered Cottam Ukuleles, Preston Handbell Ensemble, Good Day Sunshine Recorder Group,
- Relaunched Preston Scratch Band in a new venue,
- Co-founded and delivered Jubiloso, a music-making group for people with learning disabilities,
- Delivered the Galloway’s Choir, accessible for blind people,
- Led singalongs and drum circles at the Blue Flamingo dementia café with the Blue Flamingo Community Choir to launch in June,
- Led singing and drumming sessions at Leyland adult day care centre,
- Been employed by the Worldwise Samba Drummers and occasionally by the Preston People’s Choir and Walk this Way choir to lead their sessions and performances,
- Delivered three runs of The Green Choir promoting environmental awareness through song,
- Provided workshops for the Preston Jazz & Improvisation Festival leading to public performances by mostly inexperienced musicians,
- Provided other one-off music workshops for schools, charities, away days, conferences and community centres.

Activities planned for the coming year include providing thirty music workshops at venues run by the Foxton Centre, primarily for homeless people, and sessions in areas of Preston that are currently culturally under-served and include demographics that are unlikely to travel to the city centre.
