Melissa has a rare condition called Angelman Syndrome, a Genetic condition that mainly affects her nervous system. She was diagnosed when she was three years old and has many problems including Epilepsy, mobility problems, and limited motor skills. Melissa needs constant supervision, help with eating and toileting and will need 24 hour care for the rest of her life. The Doctors said Melissa would probably never walk or achieve very much, but she had other ideas. Her campaign to show disabilities need not be a barrier to achieving goals but more a challenge to discover how to get there. Many people, both those she has met and those who know her through the media often call Melissa an inspiration. Through her raising awareness of AS she has appeared on TV and in the national press.
